Did You Know?

Arriving at Petland

  • Where do Petland puppies come from?
  • Petland’s custom-designed puppy kennels are larger in all dimensions than recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture. Petland kennels are designed to be easily disassembled and cleaned. Water bottles are located outside the kennels for sanitation and safety. Suspended grates are used to keep puppies away from animal waste while sanitized mats are in place to provide comfort. Underneath the grates is a pan that slides out, making the continual removal of waste quick and easy.
  • Petland puppies and kittens have been health-checked by at least two and in most cases three veterinarians before they are offered to the public.
  • Every Petland store has a local consulting veterinarian. The consulting veterinarian:
    • Performs weekly examinations on new arrivals, and if necessary, provides medical treatment.
    • Completes a Puppy/Kitten Care Record to document each pet’s health upon its arrival to the store.
    • Has the authority to have any pet that fails a health examination returned to the original breeder.
    • Sets the protocol for in-store preventative health procedures.
  • Petland stores are staffed by trained, full-time kennel technicians, who are responsible for daily sanitizing of all kennels, ongoing cleaning, maintaining health records and working under consulting veterinarians’ instructions.
  • A daily health record is maintained on all Petland puppies and kittens. This document keeps track of eating and drinking habits, weight, and other veterinary information.
  • Bathing and grooming are performed, as needed, during a pet’s stay at Petland.
  • A puppy socialization program is in place at Petland stores. It involves staff and customers in holding, exercising and playing with puppies and kittens on a daily basis to ensure that each pet’s socialization needs are met.
  • A high quality, premium food is fed to all Petland puppies and kittens to ensure they receive all the nutrients they need to become healthy, mature pets.

Choosing Your Petland PetsTM

  • Before a puppy or kitten is adopted, Petland pet counselors spend time matching the right pet with the right family to help meet the needs of both. Sometimes, a pet counselor must discourage a family from choosing a particular breed and suggest a breed more suitable to the family’s circumstances.
  • While Petland stores offer purebred puppies and kittens, our store operators also assist pet lovers who adopt from their local animal shelter. Petland’s Adopt-A-PetSM program makes available Petland store display windows to pets from animal shelters and others in the local community.
  • All Petland puppies and kittens leave the store with a health warranty. New owners are advised to take their puppy or kitten to a veterinarian for an additional health check. The warranty covers infectious diseases for an initial period plus hereditary or congenital disorders for one year.
  • Petland customers receive ongoing pet counseling from Petland pet counselors. Our pet counselors educate customers about the responsibilities of pet ownership. Discussions and informational handouts on such topics as housebreaking, chewing, grooming and nutrition offer many solutions.

Ensuring A Successful Transition

  • When Petland puppies go home, the new owners receive a free Pets for a LifetimeSM Resource Kit. This comprehensive dog training kit includes a training DVD and unlimited consultation with certified dog behavior specialists. In the kit, new pet owners also will find discount coupons on a number of pet care products and references for individuals and community organizations that specialize in various aspects of canine care.
  • Petland promotes ongoing veterinary care to new pet owners and offers free an initial veterinary checkup.
  • Petland pet counselors educate new puppy and kitten owners on responsible pet care, especially the importance of spaying and neutering. Petland stores have Stop Pet Overpopulation programs in place with local veterinarians to do the right thing to prevent unwanted litters.
  • If our mission of matching the right pet with the right customer is not fulfilled, then Petland has a Puppy Love: 48-Hour Return Policy.
  • If a Petland pet owner finds he or she can no longer keep their commitment to a Petland pet, then Petland relies on its Pets for a LifetimeSM policy to aid the pet owner and pet. The goal is to see that no Petland pet ends up homeless or burdens an animal shelter.
