Hamsters are one of America's most popular pets. Originally
coming from Syria, all of the hamsters currently in the world
are descended from a family captured near Alleppo. They come
in several varieties, the most common being the Golden Hamster.
Also available are the Fancy, which is multi-colored and the
Teddy Bear, which is much like its namesake. Though they are
unable to climb, they are masters of escape.
The life span of a healthy hamster is two to three years.
Sexual maturity occurs at 30 to 45 days and the gestation
period is 16 days. The number in a litter may be four to ten,
with their eyes opening at 15 days. During birth as well as
during weaning, all other adults should be removed. Adults
weigh from 100 to 120 grams (approximately 1/5 pound). The
optimum room temperature should be between 68°F and 75°F.
Rapid change in temperature is conducive to respiratory disease.
Proper litter should be provided and replaced when soiled.
