The most popular pet bird, by far, is the parakeet. Originally
coming from Australia, in the wild, the only color to occur
naturally is green. But now that all birds are domestically
bred, selective breeding has produced a variety of beautiful
colors. The British can be credited with popularizing keets.
They brought them to England with the name "Budgies"
which is a shortened version of the Aborigine word budgerigar,
which in the English translation means "good to eat".
The life span of a healthy bird can be from 10 to 12 years.
Some telltale signs can identify a young parakeet. These are
eyes that are totally black, a black or partially black beak
and a forehead with black bars totally covering it. A parakeet
holds the Guinness record for most words spoken by a bird.
And in a hour or two any keet can be finger tamed and turned
into a lovable little pet.
